For the past month, I’ve had the chance to train with Kaya in Colorado, getting ready for our gravel season. It was my first time in the area and the mountain roads near Denver did not disappoint. New roads, some great riding buddies, and I got to put my new Aspero-5 gravel bike to good use!
Early on, we decided to tackle a goal we had been discussing since earlier in the cyclocross season: Kaya’s first 100-mile ride. It was super fun to also have Jules join us for Kaya’s first century ride!
We started off through the mountains and steep gravel climbs before descending down into town for a pit stop and snack which helped us make it to the end. Kaya crushed it, with no sign of bonking. She was so stoked to have completed her first big ride that she is now gearing up for the Unbound 100-mile event. Since our ride she has knocked out two more century rides!
Our time in Colorado wasn’t just about riding, though. We threw in some hiking and running to keep things interesting, exploring the mountains and the Flatirons. I can't thank the Musgrave family enough for their hospitality, it was a blast hanging out with them all. Their two dogs, Microphone and Betty, definitely kept things lively and fun.
Originally, Kaya and I had planned to do a gravel race at the start of May, but decided to stay closer to home and opted for an epic long ride followed up with a local road race. The whole experience was so fun! I had the opportunity to experience the famous local “Worlds” ride and each 100-mile ride we did got faster and faster.
This month has been packed with amazing rides, fun moments, and lots of exploring with Kaya. It’s been an absolute blast, and even though it’s time for me to head back home for a bit, I can’t wait to return to Colorado someday.
